You’ve probably noticed that things have changed a bit. We haven’t finished updating all our pages yet, so some sections are still using this design. Please bear with us...

Let's talk about Southwark

What we do

The Community Engagement division works to create opportunities for local people to get involved with the services and decision-making of the council.

The main areas of our work are:

  • Providing funding and support for voluntary and community groups
  • Working with tenants and residents to manage and improve our housing
  • Championing local issues through the borough’s five community councils
  • Building links and support amongst our new and minority ethnic communities
  • Promoting civic pride and community cohesion through events and projects
  • Supporting continuous improvement and consistency across our consultation and engagement work

Our community engagement work is supported by a number of key principles which can be viewed here

Who we are

The Community Engagement division is made up of four teams:

Civic Engagement

The civic engagement team works with the Mayor of Southwark as custodians of civic pride and champions of community cohesion. We support the mayor in his role as First Citizen and ambassador for the borough and also lead the council's annual programme of civic engagement, including ceremonial events such as the Southwark Civic Awards, Remembrance Sunday, and Holocaust Memorial Day.

Commissioning and Voluntary Sector Support

Responsible for a number of funding programmes, including Community Capacity annual grants, Community Legal Advice contracts, Tenant Fund, Healthwatch and the Joint Security Initiative.  The team is also responsible for building the capacity of tenants and residents to develop themselves, contribute to their communities and get involved in decisions about their homes and neighbourhoods.

The team is also works with tenants and residents to build their capacity to contribute to their communities and participate in decision making and the management of their homes and neighbourhoods. We offer advice and guidance to established and start-up tenants and residents associations and run a comprehensive residents’ training programme. Our two resource centres: Taplow (Walworth) and Albrighton (East Dulwich) offer computing facilities, free internet access and printing.

Community Participation

Working to ensure residents have a say in how council services are delivered and improved, including through supporting good practice in community engagement, working in partnership with minority ethnic groups, creating new opportunities for local people to get involved in the work of the council, and broadening tenant and resident voices in housing management.

The five Community Councils in Southwark are an important part of the council's decision making process. The team works closely with elected members and the community to identify relevant themes and topics for the meetings, as well as managing community funding streams.

We are also the key point of contact for local associations to obtain advice and support; ranging from constitutional and finance matters through to training and recognition advice, empowering Southwark tenants to fully participate in managing their homes while bringing a sense of community to their local area. The team welcomes queries from any resident group in Southwark.
