Health and Wellbeing Board

The Health and Wellbeing Board is a statutory committee of the council and a forum where the council and key partners from the health and care system work together to improve the health and wellbeing of our local population and to reduce health inequalities. It includes key agencies such as the council, the NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group, Southwark Healthwatch and the Metropolian Police Service.

The board's priorities are set out in its Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy, this strategy outlines how the council and its partners will work together to improve the health of the population, reduce health inequalities and promote integration.

The Health and Wellbeing Board has set a far reaching ambition and recognises that to address the complex multi factorial determinants of health, an approach is required that encompasses the following:

  • improving the social economic wellbeing of the borough
  • giving our children and young people the best start
  • supporting risk reduction and positive behaviour changes to reduce the risks for poorer health
  • improving the detection and management of people who have common health conditions
  • supporting our most vulnerable
  • strengthening local approaches to integration so that seamless services are accessible, effective and efficient

To achieve this the board needs to understand the needs of the population (supported by the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment); listen to the community and work in partnership to build a fairer future for all.

The strategy is underpinned by action plans which are taken forward by a range of partnership boards. The role for the health and wellbeing board is to:

  • set the high level direction and ambition
  • monitor by outcomes
  • conduct deep dives
  • be assured that ambitions become a reality
