Different types of housing

What is a housing association?

Housing associations build and manage homes on a not for profit basis. Many housing associations are charities. There are more than 40 housing associations in Southwark, owning and managing over 10,000 properties.

Some housing associations have a special role such as providing homes for people with special support needs or those from particular ethnic backgrounds.

You can't apply directly to a housing association. You have go to on the council's housing register. The properties are advertised in the same way as council homes, through Homesearch. But some housing associations have different rules from the council about things like pets or how many people you can have in your household, so it's worth checking before you decide on a housing association home.

New housing association tenants will have what is known as an assured tenancy. This is broadly similar to a council tenancy although in most cases you will not have the right to buy. Also, you may not have the same rights to pass on your tenancy after you die.
