Welcome to our new website!

You’ve probably noticed that things have changed a bit. We haven’t finished updating all our pages yet, so some sections are still using this design. Please bear with us...

Fitness Licences

Southwark's parks provide a great setting for people of all ages to get fit and stay fit, offering a wide range of sports, leisure and fitness activities, including outdoor gyms.

Many of our parks play host to healthy walking groups, charity fun runs, sport coaching and gardening clubs that are run by community organisations and offered free to the public.

If you wish to use the park for personal training or to run fitness sessions on a commercial basis you must be licensed. Licences are issued to sports clubs and businesses that charge their customers. These licences are required to permit the use of space in our parks to run organised activities which allows us to regulate use and maintain safety. We licence operators for the following reasons:

  • Access to and use of public open spaces is preserved for all visitors
  • To protect public parks for everyone to enjoy
  • Fitness operators hold appropriate qualifications (based on industry best practice), are fully insured and hold liability for participant's safety
  • Park visitors can enjoy, engage and benefit from various forms of fitness training in public spaces
  • To manage the high demand for fitness providers wishing to use Southwark's parks

We provide free licences to group activities that are offered free to participants.

A fee is applied to licences for businesses who charge their customers either for individual sessions and classes or through monthly or annual membership fees.

A full list of fees and charges, along with our Code of Conduct and Terms and Conditions can be found here: http://www.2.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/4220/fitness_licence_documents

Our licence application form is now online, where you will be invited to fill in your details and upload all relevant documents, such as qualifications, first aid certificate etc. You can access the application form here:

https://forms.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=1319

We will need details of the park, proposed dates / times, tutor qualifications, proof of insurances and completed risk assessments for your activity.

Please be aware the demand for fitness providers using Southwark's parks is high and not all applications will be approved.
