Statistics and census

Southwark is a dynamic and diverse borough. With over 300 different languages spoken, there is no question that the community the council serves is complex and the council uses a range of different approaches to develop an in-depth understanding of future trends in service demand.

There is a wide range of publicly available datasets from external organisations that provide information and insight into the population of Southwark. The links on this page are a good starting point for exploring many aspects of our diverse and complex borough.

Southwark has also completed a nationally recognised research project to learn more about the everyday lives of members of five specific communities and their interaction with public services, providing analysis and detail lacking in existing data. The research provides a new perspective and generates insight around inequalities and diversity in the borough. It tells us about coping strategies for those with no recourse to public funds and about how people get by in every day life.
