Southwark youth council structure

Southwark Youth Council and youth community councils

What it's all about

Southwark council values the voice of children and young people and encourages their participation in decision making and in supporting their community.  The information below explains the structure of youth decision making and how it sits within the council.

Southwark Youth Council

The primary purpose of Southwark Youth Council (SYC) is to act as the voice of young people and to promote the views of Southwark young people to the adult decision makers of the council. SYC members will attend weekly meeting and receive regular accreditaed training in order to effectively represent the views of Southwark young people by:

  • Creating a mutual communication and feedback relationship with the 8 Youth Community Councils, school councils and key forums for hard to reach groups
  • Create an annual action plan based on the priorities raised by these groups
  • Plan and deliver the annual youth conference event in conjunction with these groups
  • Actively prommote the views of Southwark young people to councilors, council departments and other organisations
  • Participate in consultations for council departments and other organisations, who wish to incorporate the views of Southwark young people into their work
  • Participate in initiatives to improve the quality of services for Soutwark young people, such as mystery shopping, monitoring and evaluation exercises and youth interview panels

SYC membership

  • SYC will comprise of 20 young people elected from across the borough
  • Members will be elected to serve for a term of two years.
  • SYC will nominate a member and two deputies to the UK Youth Parliament
  • SYC will co-opt new members mid term if membership of the group falls below 50 percent

Youth Community Councils

The role of the 8 Youth Community Council (YCC) is to ensure that young people have an accessible forum in their locality which represent their views and is open to any young person who lives, works or receives education in Southwark.

The role of the YCC is to:

  • Represent young people in their area by collecting and feeding back information to and from the Youth Council and young people in their area.
  • Advise service providers and council officers on matters relating to the delivery of services in their area.
  • Create opportunities for young people to meet councilors to discuss their concerns and interests and be part of local decision making processes.
  • Actively engage young people in their area in participative activities, inter-generational projects and community cohesion initiatives.

The Eight YCCs are:

  • Bermondsey
  • Borough and Bankside Camberwell
  • Dulwich
  • Nunhead and Peckham Rye
  • Peckham
  • Rotherhithe
  • Walworth

What's the point?

Why are we asking you to get involved? Well, we think it is really important that all young people in Southwark have a chance to have a say in every decision that affects their lives.

This year's elections are just the start of what we have planned for improving levels of engagement and participation in the above areas.  We also want to hear what you think are the areas we need to work on.

But what's in it for me?

  • For starters, all members will be trained and supported by youth workers. There will be the chance to attend residentials and special 'Members Only' social events
  • Everyone involved with SYC and the YCCs will be offered  the opportunity to receive accreditation for their involvement in special projects
  • The training received and skills developed will also enhance your c.v and enable you to gain professional references
  • Opportunity to make a positive contribution to your community
  • Meet new people, new environments and have access to wider opportunities
