Welcome to our new website!

You’ve probably noticed that things have changed a bit. We haven’t finished updating all our pages yet, so some sections are still using this design. Please bear with us...

Design, heritage and character

See the list below for our evidence base and studies on urban design, heritage and character for the London Borough of Southwark and it's neighbourhoods

 Characterisation Studies

Our characterisation studies seek to establish and evaluate the current character of areas undergoing regeneration. They help to set out opportunities to preserve and enhance the unique character of Southwark's neighbourhoods.

Studies have been prepared to support the adopted and emerging draft planning policies and guidance for:

  • Bankside, Borough and London Bridge (2013)
  • The Old Kent Road (2016)
  • Peckham and Nunhead (2012)

 Conservation Area Appraisals

Area appraisals that consider the key characteristics for each of Southwark's conservation areas and the rational for their designation

Heritage and conservation studies and reports

This section contains a report by English Heritage (now Historic England) about the history and heritage survey of the Old Kent Road, carried out in 2009

 Place-making and public realm

These reports set out urban design interventions that will help deliver the aspirations of adopted and emerging draft planning policies and guidance.

We currently have studies for:

  • Canada Water (2009)
  • Old Kent Road (2016)

Tall buildings, visual impact assessments and density

These studies assess the impact of tall buildings across the borough, including on townscape views. There three studies for:

  • The Bankside, Borough and London Bridge Opportunity Area (2009/10)
  • The London Borough of Southwark as a whole (2010)
  • The Aylesbury Estate Regeneration programme (2009)

These were prepared to support the adoption of the Core Strategy (2011) and the Aylesbury Area Action Plan (2010). We will be preparing new studies to support the adoption of the New Southwark Plan and the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan in the future.

There is a supplementary study on our approach to the suburban densities in Rotherhithe and Dulwich to support our density policies in the Core Strategy. There is more information about our approach to residential density in the housing evidence base section.

Urban design studies and background papers

Our urban design studies and background papers have been prepared to justify and assess our approach to our urban design policies and guidance in our adopted and emerging planning policies.

There are studies and background papers for:

  • Blackfriars Road (2014)
  • Canada Water (2013)
  • Elephant and Castle (2012)
  • Peckham and Nunhead (2012/2013)
