You’ve probably noticed that things have changed a bit. We haven’t finished updating all our pages yet, so some sections are still using this design. Please bear with us...

Free, healthy school meals

 FF logo 2
From September 2013, if you have a child attending a Southwark primary school setting, they will be eligible for a free, healthy school lunch.

For your child to get a free lunch, you will be asked for some information by your child's school. Find out more information about free, healthy school meals.

If your child is in years 5 to 11 your school will collect details to allow us to assess if your child is eligible for a free, healthy school lunch.

School meal standards

Southwark schools provide a fully inclusive two course meal for a set price each day, in line with national nutritional standards. These ensure that children are provided with a healthy, balanced diet.

The new standards require:

  • High quality meat, poultry or oily fish are regularly available
  • At least two portions of fruit and vegetables with every meal
  • Bread, other cereals and potatoes are regularly available

Additionally, there are controls on the following foods:

  • Deep fried food limited to no more than two portions per week
  • Fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate and other confectioneries may be removed from school meals and vending machines

If you have any queries about school catering or if your child has dietary requirements, you can contact the head teacher or the school governors. You can also arrange an appointment to go into school and see for yourself the service being provided.

Further information

Further information on school lunch standards can be found on the School Food Trust website.
