New homeowner service 'shop' opens in The Blue

Published Friday, 21 October 2016

The new homeowners service 'shop' will be opening on 24 October at The Marketplace in Bermondsey.

It will offer a bespoke service tailored to the needs of leaseholders, providing face to face advice and support. The old service shop in Abbeyfield will close from today (21 October).

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said: “We made a commitment to put leaseholders in charge of their service and to establish an independent leaseholder management company to hold the council properly to account.

"Stemming from the feedback from the consultation we had with leaseholders, we have set up a new homeowner agency, called My Southwark Homeowners. I am delighted that we will be able to offer appointments starting from January next year, when we expect the whole service to be fully up and running.

"I visited the agency’s new shop in The Blue, Bermondsey, this week and I am very pleased that we will be able to offer appointments to leaseholders with immediate effect. I hope this will reassure leaseholders that we recognise their unique housing issues and that our door is open to offer relevant help, advice and support."

The aim of the Agency is to:

  • Ensure that Southwark homeowners are treated fairly by the council and get a fair deal
  • Provide confidence to the homeowner that issues affecting them are being monitored and scrutinised properly
  • Improve customer satisfaction for homeowners
  • Oversee the performance of the service to homeowners
  • Be completely open about what makes up the costs of major works, repairs and other charges and assure homeowners that these are fair and reasonable

The new service will be overseen by an independent board, the My Southwark Homeowners Board, made up of homeowners and other professionals with an interest in leasehold matters. We believe that this service, for council homeowners, is the first of its kind and it will be delivered within the current costs of delivering homeowner services.

As part of the new service homeowners now have access to an extended arbitration service and this has been well received.  It is important that homeowners know what they are paying in service charges and why, and this new agency will ensure that this happens.
