It's easier and safer than ever before to get kids playing outdoors as Southwark Council signs up to Play Streets.
What is play streets?
Founded by London Play, the scheme aims to revive the 'play time' culture of the past. By signing up to Play Streets your children can play safely on the streets without any traffic. Play Street not only promotes healthy activities, but also brings the community together in a positive fashion. Sign up today and watch your kids play on the streets like previous generations once did.
During the summer months, Southwark Council has eased traffic regulations to help local people set up play activities for their children. Applications are now open for anyone who wants to close their local road for Play Streets.
How does it work?
Successful applicants will be granted a temporary play street order, which allows a road to be closed for a maximum of three hours for one day per month.
While organisers have overall responsibility for the event e.g. physically blocking the road, the council is at hand if you need any advice. If necessary, barriers can be provided by a council supplier. Organisers will also need to ensure that residents living on the road, including those not involved in the activity, are able to park and access their homes as normal.
How do I apply?
Applications must demonstrate that there is local support for the scheme. For support completing the application form, please contact Ian Law on 020 7525 2170.
